Lesson 38: of throwback games

If you are a millennial, this post is especially for you.

°•°•°•°•

Welcome back to Being Girly. I know the last post was a little too much for some people to handle, but then, it is way better for each of us to stay in the loop. Talking about menstrual health lightly should not gross you out. If it does, then take each milestone at a time. You will get there.

Today, I am feeling rather nostalgic. So this post will definitely not ruin your appetite. It will take you back in time though.

When you were a kid, there were probably games you grew up playing, especially if you went to public schools (like I did) and private schools that had kids who knew how to have a good time in the field by turning their environment into their very own world of games.

See, a lot of kids today don't know what 'msongesho' is, or don't understand how balls could be made of plastic paper and sisal rope (and still hurt when you got hit. I got hit by away balls all the time. Ugh) because plastic bags have been outlawed in Kenya.

On their behalf, and because Min Yoongi got me feeling the blues and throwbacks, I decided it would be fun to pen something about these games. Are you ready?

Here we go!

•°•°•°•°

1. 'Kati'
Literally translated from Kiswahili to English, this game means 'middle.'

There were usually three or more players, two who threw the ball back and forth, and one who was in the middle, avoiding being hit by the other two.

Most times, this game was fun when played by more than three people because then there would be a division of the people into two teams. If there were ten players, then four of them would catch the ball. the remaining six would be in the middle. Sometimes, these roles would change. Most times, this group of ten kids would divide into two subgroups of five each, and select two people from each sub group who they though would play catch with.

This was easy if the number of players were an even number. If the number of players was an odd value, for example, nine or eleven, then there would be someone bestowed on the title 'fair' who was the worst at the game.

Any time a new team came in, the 'fair' would be the first to get hit. Then once they were out, the rest of the players would get into the middle one by one and try to achieve a high score. The best players did not play catch... Or sometimes they did.

If an entire class of, say twenty girls wanted to play, then there would be Twp catchers and the rest of the eighteen would jump into the middle and try to avoid getting hit. This was usually very exciting. Cheers were what these players fed on, and most times, the sight of them playing brought everyone to watch.

2. 'Rounder'
This was probably inspired by either baseball or cricket, but drew its roots from 'kati'. There were 'homeruns' and everyone got a chance to get into the middle, sometimes in twos, sometimes in threes, sometimes in fives even!

So, this game was also probably a type of 'kati' that allowed for more players. There were four corner stones drawn up before the game began. The players would start from the middle and run to the corners if the ball went out of range, or if the person in the middle was a hard target to hit. If the catchers threw the ball at you while you were on the run to one of the corners, you were to duck or side step it.

If you got hit, you were out until your team became catchers.

It also had a 'fair' sometimes.

3. 'Msomgesho'
Isimu jamii allows this term to be used.

I don't really think there is another Kiswahili word that can make it more grammatical, but 'Msongesho' meant 'Move.'

Two teams drew up a table on the ground using either stick on the soil or chalk on a pavement. The players then each had stones that they threw into the table and moved with their feet.

The table would be divided into either six or eight boxes. Each player was to do six or eight circuits. A circuit basically meant that you threw the stone to a box and went till the last box (either six or eight) without stepping on the borders of the table.

Once someone completed these first six or eight circuits, then they could throw their stone background and claim a box as their "home" or safe place to rest their feet or switch when they got tired. The number of "homes" one got was determined by the number of successful circuits one completed.

Woe onto the opposed if the other team won adjacent boxes along the line to the rest point. Good luck jumping over two or three 'homes' without stepping on the lines!

4. 'In-sa-pout'
I wrote that in the way it was pronounced.

This game relied on either woolen knitting thread or rubber strips. This game could be played by up to ten people. What happened was that two people stood on opposite ends of a long piece of thread whose ends were tied together.

There were levels to this game for the players who would jump in and jump out then in then out. It started from the ankles sometimes, or the knees, then progressed upto the armpits. Whoever broke the thread was out.

A lot of girls played this game and those who wore skirts or had extra sweaters were especially lucky. They could use them to lower one side of the string then both sides when jumping out.

Once one successfully completed the knees, hips, waist and armpits, then the next level was using one part of the body for the players at the opposite sides. If the game started with two legs, then the next level would have one leg. At the waist the players would turn to the side, and this would be repeated when they got to the armpits.

Once this level was completed, there would be both legs again then one would jump in such a way as to have one side of the string between their legs, before shifting to the other side of the string. This would be done two, then three then five times with the changes happening after the knees, hips, waist and armpits were completed. There was a time people went up to ten before jumping in then out.

Other levels included fishy where the string formed an 'x' in the middle and lifting the string with your leg to jump in.

5. Jump Rope
This clearly does not need a translation.

Having a jump rope as a girl made you very popular.

If there were three players, then two would either take the stance of 'kati' or 'rounder' at opposite ends with the third player in the middle. Sometimes the players were more than three, so the x-2 players would take to the middle. Whoever tripped was out.

There seemed to be a 'fish' level to this game where the ones holding each end would sway the rope from side to side.

Actually, now that I remember, this game was called 'kamba' in my boarding school. This roughly translated into 'rope.'

One of the songs sang during jump rope included 'old mother harbour.'

6. 'Chako'
Translated as 'yours', this game involved tapping people and yelling 'chako'.

It is closely related to "you're it!" The 'chako' was almost like a contagious disease passed around by the tap of one's hand on someone else's body.

7. 'Cha Mama'
Also called 'cha kalongolo' or 'kalongo', this game was played by three or more players. Two kids became the parents, while the rest could be the uncle and aunt with kids and nephews and nieces.

It was basically a role playing game that involved mum and dad coming home to take care of the kids.

Sometimes two kids would play parents to dolls. Food would be "cooked" and "served" and the kids would "eat." I can't remember what else we did, but it was always GE (General Exhibition).

8. Hand Games
When I say this, I mean those GE's where people tapped on each other's hands and sang songs like 'consultation' and what not. Exactly like how Kurt Schneider and his friends do with their covers.

I was never good at this game.

9. Group singing games
'Kitambaa changu kimepotea' and the 'I sent a letter to my father' were the most common singing games. The first means 'I lost my handkerchief' and the person singing would go on the outside border of the circle people were sitting in, and say 'si wewe' meaning 'not you' before randomly choosing someone and taking off.

The aim was to make it back to the spot the person running in the opposite direction would have taken, and sitting down before they arrived. We learnt sliding skills from this game.

The other was called 'consultation' where the leader would ask everyone to give examples of flowers, names of countries, types of shoes, subjects etc.

Another game that was commonly played was 'skamaress' or 'kamaress' where people would sing someone's name and invite them to dance. This person would choose a style to dance to before returning to their spot in the circle.

°•°•°•°•

That was a lot to write about! However, there are many more games that I can't even describe like 'skiddie' where we slid on the floor using our socks, or down a slope on the lid of a bucket, or a piece of wood. There was also 'imitation', 'wrestling', 'stoppie' or 'stopper' where people froze, there was football of course, and there were other singing games that I can't possibly mention because of the time.

I wonder which of these games were your childhood favourites?

Maybe you can leave a comment below. That will be much appreciated.

Meanwhile, I am off to eat lunch because I am starving! Good day!

Lesson 37: of life hacks at your bloody cycle

Every woman I know finds that time of the month a little exhausting. Which time of the month? Well, remember that time when you're grumpier or moodier or broodier than any other day or week? Yes, that time. Remember when you're bleeding through your vagina like a pig? Yes, that time.

I know, i'm not at all subtle today. Let me get to it because 22% battery (well, now it is 21%) charge is creeping up on me like it owns me, so i'm going to keep it short and sweet.

So, life hacks, huh?

1. Buy a packet of pads any time you go shopping
Yes, this helps you because we've all had that one time when we ran out of pads and we wondered who to send, or debated whether cotton or tissue would help soak up the blood better (and we started calculating the speed of diffusion of blood through the tissue in comparison to the cotton. Wueh!!! Sema equations!).

2. Hello dark panties!
Yes, yes and yes. Pale underwear are not your friends for those three plus days when your bloody friend visits.

3. Cravings' savings
Wait, did you hear the rhyme? Yes, save for your cravings! Don't indulge in them too often unless it is something healthy with little or no fat and/or salt.

4. Nausea fix
You will need a nausea fix. Yes, it can be ginger, or lemon, or both. Infuse them into your tea and have that anytime you feel it creeping up on you.

5. Pimples are normal
I know. As normal as breathing. Don't touch them. Who am I kidding? I have like three right now and they're bloody painful and I already popped two of them.

5. Toothpaste can be friendly.
Toothpaste can be used over your pimples too. I personally prefer to wait till it dries properly to take it off, but there are certain directions of use on beauty blogs, so go with that.

6. Darker sheets
White sheets are a no-no, especially if your monthly visitor loves to make a mess and leak out onto your sheets. Change your sheets as soon as it visits.

7. Regular laundry days
A week before your red letter day, do all your laundry and start washing them daily so as not to harm your back.

8. Painkillers are your friend...
However, don't end up being a pill-head.

9. ... But have a hot water bottle as your ride or die
It helps a lot, even if you get insomnia. A hot water bottle is supposed to be on the same level of importance as people might place painkillers.

10. Exercise a little
Yes. It will get you through insomnia and reduce your pain. I personally dance to a lot of music for the fun of it, until this day comes and I can't.

11. Finally... Cuddling
Cuddling helps a lot.

Wrapping yourself up with a blanket and all the seasons of Gilmore Girls within reach just makes one happy. This is my personal imagination for myself.

And, yes, I am a Gilmore fan.

I hope these will help your starter pack. Good morning!

Gomawo (thank you)
Naega (me).

Lesson 36: of girl's thoughts and other long stories

Have you ever looked at a girl and wondered what she's thinking?

Well, wonder no more, because I can tell you for free that, no, she's probably not even thinking of taking you home with her tonight, but rather where she left her favourite accessory or lipstick that she would probably have loved to wear to the date that just ended.

Here's a list of things I know I find myself thinking of at any one time. I hope you like it because this is supposed to be a fun post! Okay, enough introduction.

What is a girl thinking about at any one given time?
1. I shouldn't have left the socket on.

2. I think I left my window open.

3. Do I have kales/beans stuck on my teeth?

4. Wait, my underwear went for lunch again.

5. Does the person behind me know my underwear went for lunch?

22. Did I solve that equation in my sleep?

23. I definitely solved it last night.

24. What's the answer?

25. Oooh! Book heaven!!!

26. Is this book on offer!?

51. Stop smiling with your teeth

52. Smize!!!

53. My nails look weird

54. My hair's really itchy

55. I can't reach into the most itchy part

56. Gently slap it

59. Where did my calculator go?

60. Do I need a new shampoo?

61. I need to wish my best friend a happy birthday.

62. Why is everyone so late...?

63. Let's do this thing!!!

Lesson 35: Of Late Nights

I was supposed to be asleep by 1.00am, because i'm supposed to be studying for a CAT. It is on Monday. There's laundry, and I also need to have time to make a dash to the market and get a discount on cabbage, because it is still dry and hot outside and the kales being sold are the "kiangazi" type.

Yet despite my busy in tray, i'm somehow awake. You'd think that the thought of losing weight via maintaining constant 6-8 hours of sleep would lure me into sleep but no, it hasn't worked.

I wonder why I am even awake.

I wasn't planning to update any of my blogs today morning, yet somehow here we are.

In passing, how is your menstrual hygiene going? Are you using clean water and ditching douching? Are you changing the pads regularly? By that I mean about every about 3-6 hours after wearing it, but if it fills under that time, it is okay to change it. Are you shaving? Are you keeping your hands off your pretty face when that pimple shows up days before the flood happens? Are you obliging your cravings? Are you eating well? If you need to cry, don't stop yourself. If you need to rant, do it.

I don't know what else to say so i'm about to end this post. However, before I do, I would just like to give you a short tale.

See, I got these hair additions recently but it is really hot here so I tend to sweat more... Yes, it makes it smell weird. Apart from that, where my hair is constantly exposed to the heat is turning brittle of some sort.

I also wondered about possibility of heat contributing to more pimples? I know, I should google it, but that will probably be after this blog post.

I've been thinking of taking my Korean classes seriously. One other thing I need to take seriously? Wattpad. If you know, you know.

Okay, i'm yawning. Good night.

Wait... Before I go... How do you tell an admirer you don't like them back without hurting them as much?

Also, how do you go from "I am married." To leaning in to kiss a poster of your crush and then having to pretend to be cleaning the room?

I am tired.

Lesson 34: of why there's a two year gap in my ARMY activities

ARMY are intelligent.

I thought Directioners were the kind of fandom to both fear and admire, but ARMY have proven to be worth more than them.

Happy New Year, and welcome to Being Girly. If you are new here, you'll probably be surprised about how my posts keep going beyond the subject of each blog. That i cannot explain, so I'll have to tell you that this post in particular is a follow-up on my ARMY update in the previous post. That is why this post is here.

I know, you probably think i'm having another case of insomnia. True, but with good reason. See, I watched some videos on Youtube which left me in surprise. I even cried. I know... it isn't that time of the month. Why should I cry? There are no painful cramps to cry about. Right...?

Well, this post is about Bangtan and their 'Wings' short films whose story line goes back, way back to 'Danger.' I watched the short films and then a video on how Jin is Abraxas popped up and i started watching it. Yes, my very intelligent boyfriend mentions Abraxas in the short film as he gives the story line of the whole 'Wings' concept through out each video.

So, my mind was completely blown. See, recently Big Hit (the label BTS is signed to) released a comic book called 'Save Me' which seems to be drawing inspiration from 'Wings.' Then again, someone or some people from ARMY have already realized this. The only difference is that Jin is not Abraxas, but he is a time traveler. Or rather, he goes back in time to save his friends' lives. Jungkook commits suicide, Yoongi and Jimin are dead ( i think), Taehyung is taken into custody for killing his abusive dad, Hoseok is distinctly missing, Namjoon is working a job that tests his patience and Jin has just returned from abroad. That's all of them, right?

Now, Jin chooses to go back in time to save Namjoon from getting arrested for getting into a fight. On that same day, Jungkook is supposed to commit suicide, so he goes looking for him. I haven't found out if he saved him, and if Taehyung is stopped from killing his dad. I'm one of the ring leaders of the 'Broque Brigade' so we wait till things are free to read them (heheheh. the only thing we allow ourselves to lose are the internet bundles, but if we find free wifi we are going to enjoy it to the best of our abilities).

Back to the 'Wings' films, Jungkook is crying over losing Yoongi. Jimin is living in a lie while coping with depression  and attempting to commit suicide. Taehyung is guilty and trapped in a cage, Hoseok is in a psych ward and taking pills which take him to a crazy high. Yoongi is watching fire consume his piano, while Namjoon barely makes it out of the mirror world to answer a mysterious phone call. Jin seats in a room that gives me the creeps when the candles go out, because a shadow falls. There's the scene of him looking sad, as if he is leaving.

Of course they are all connected. In the 'Jin Is Abraxas' theory, he is watching over everything the boys. That is why the photos he leaves behind are. The petals he burns are six (yes, they counted the petals... seriously... my mind is blown). Jungkook is crying over Yoongi's death... but is he dead...? If he is the one whistling, and Yoongi hears it, then it means that either they were both dead, or trapped in alternate realities, or dreaming... that is still something i have to think about again... Of course the overall story is that all of them are in the darkest realities of their lives. Watching Jungkook look at the painting (that we all thought was Taehyung, but is apparently a combination of Jungkook and Yoongi's faces (i know, mind blown) made me want to cry too. We even watch snippets of how he died (supposedly by a car accident and when he wakes up he is in limbo). We see this same snippet when Yoongi is following the whistling down a lonely road. He almost gets run over but then we see blood on the road. He makes it back to the convenience store that has his piano only to find that the car he narrowly avoided rammed into the store and everything catches fire. Then he hears the whistle and starts to follow it again. He probably thought that the person whistling had died in the accident, but hearing the whistling obviously gives him courage and hope to keep looking. Seems like Jungkook and Yoongi find each other. Can we talk about the wings Jungkook sprouted at the end of his film...? Did he use those wings of freedom to signal and whistle repeatedly to Yoongi? Why was Yoongi playing the same notes of the whistling before he left the convenience store?

Jimin is trying to hang in there because Hoseok is no longer next to him. Apparently, Jimin has attempted to commit suicide and has failed, but it seems like Hoseok was somewhat successful. Yet, somehow, we see Hoseok in a sterile room alone (making me wonder if Jimin got better while taking his pills), and he takes a pill that makes things look somewhat psychedelic around him. When he comes down from his high, he sees the message Jimin left him and he leaves his room. We are not clear about where he goes to though.  Jimin wears a smile, but it is obvious he is still in pain (i know that smile. I understand that smile). He misses Hoseok, so he points the video camera in the direction of his 'paradise' because, yes, he too died. Get this, Jimin died by drowning, but he wakes up once he accepts that he lost Hoseok and that he has depression (i really can't explain it as well as the owner of that video did... aiii, i need to remember the name of that channel).

Well, next is Namjoon and Taehyung (coincidentally both Kims) and when Taehying gets arrested for graffiti and probably killing his father, he is questioned and requests a last phone call (apparently) which Namjoon misses. We watch Taehying get punched by invisible forces. Theory has it that those are his own mistakes and he is becoming regretful. He is approached by a dog (which is his happiness, perhaps the freedom of his sister from the clutches of his father's abusive manners), but a cage traps him (his own mental prison where he is tormented by his thoughts ) and he has to let the dog go. I am not sure if he dies though... the theory states they all died and came back to life after realizing the mistakes they made... Watching Namjoon smack the phone booth while looking dejected (it has been chained and locked) after getting out of the mirror world is heartbreaking.

Jin made me feel weirded out when he stared right at me. He holds all the photos at the end, leaving his polaroid camera behind in the darkened room. He watches a dove in motion outside his window (probably representing Jungkook or finally finding peace, or all the boys finally finding peace), then he leaves the room after setting the petals on fire and placing the photos on the carpet. They are six, as i said earlier. A mirror, an apple, a mother cuddling a kid, a bird, piano keys and a door with scratches on it. Yes... a door with scratches on it... that must have been someone's personal version of hell if they were trying to escape. The door has 'Eva' on it.

Now, i just want to point out a few additional details i didn't mention before: After Jungkook cries at the burning of the potrait of him and Yoongi, which cried (probably his tears of regret), he picks up a drawing of some sort of a bird, which he places in an envelope right before he sprouts wings. Namjoon gets the envelope and looks at the picture then tattoos himself. It comes out as an image of the bird Jungkook sent him. the bird is in flight. Namjoon then burns the message.

Then there's the image of the woman and her kid that appear on Taehyung's eye. This same image is of the portrait that shifts from the forest (yes, the almost similar forest that GOT7 used in 'Miracle' which is an indication that the little girl has passed on and gone to heaven as GOT7 are her guardian angels. Anyway, I have seen that forest too in one of my dreams when i was much younger. I was really sick and pretty much out of it, and when i saw it in the 'Miracle' video, i knew i had been in it. I never made it across the river to the other side though. Random facts. Sorry). This forest is a sign that they were dead. The fact that they are looking at it from above and aren't in it (at least for me, this is my mini-theory) is a sign that they died but got a second chance after getting out of limbo. Or maybe they got to experience Nirvana (rebirth...?) and the forest is a sign of that too...? Anyway, long story short, the next image is of the mother and the baby and also, one of the first things we are shown when we see Jimin is the card scribbled 'Eva' more than once.

Another thing I didn't mention initially is the arrangement of flowers around Jin's body on the bed (but did i see that in the short film...) exactly like how they do in Thor when they are sending their deceased off in the boats, which they set on fire. Also, the burning petals, might be a reinforcement of how fire is supposed to purify souls... right? Ugh, i'm just being random here...

Anyway, the channel VHopeIsMyHope gave these theories. The other channel went on to draw examples on how Jin was Abraxas through out the 9 MVs of the album where Jin was conveniently being distant and always with a camera, yet somehow he is close and watches over all the boys. Jin is the first to die, apparently, and the theory is that his car went over the bridge. That is why in the MVs, the boys are always walking on the bridges. Anyway, after limbo, the boys made it back, but they go back to being  reckless especially Yoongi and Taehyung. In 'Blood, Sweat and Tears' the ultimate battle between good and evil is shown. Taehyung is the devil, while Jin is Abraxas. he tries to save the boys, by making a deal with the devil and ends up giving into the dark side. Before that, it is theorized that people on the dark side are Yoongi and his reckless drinking, Taehyung and his already dark presence because he turned rogue after killing his dad, and Namjoon who sips on Taehyung's essence (apparently... ARMY think really hard. waaa). Jungkook has his feet in both camps.

Jin's supporters are Jimin and Hoseok. Hoseok ends up dying again (please, stop killing him. really...) because he keeps fighting with weapons in his hands (aiii) and Jimin who was reluctant to see the truth about everything is ready to embrace and probably ward himself off the bad influence as much as he could. I think Jungkook's dabbling was the tipping point that made Jin kiss the statue (sign a contract with the devil) and then his face cracks... (i am tired now) and this is probably a sign that he is getting dragged over to the dark side.

Now, i know this is the longest post you have seen from me. I apologize. I was just really excited. Why have i gone into detail about this? Well, it is simply because i was in shock.

See, i watched the MV for 'Blood, Sweat and Tears' in 2016, and for some reason, i  reacted strangely. I distanced myself. It was too arty, I told myself. It was a bit distracting to watch the seven handsome lads who looked alike to me then, i told myself. Heck, i knew it had a lot of meaning, especially after seeing the whole kissing the statue thing. i was so puzzled, my thought process temporarily shut down. The best way for me to deal with this was through avoiding the video.

So for the next two years, i focused on other things and lived my life that way- mulling over the next 1D comeback from hiatus, and slowing down on spamming Sautisol on twitter. I even started dating and it was pretty serious. Even then, i should have known i was bound to run into BTS' MVs again, and i did.

Even then... I am exhausted from the theories and crying i did watching the video about Jin being Abraxas. I really need to read the book behind the inspiration for the short films. Only then will i perhaps stop having too many questions.

Being a fan requires you to have an IQ higher than mine apparently. The theories they come up with... Aiii. They are almost on the same level with the Animation fans of Disney who believe that Jane from 'George of The Jungle' is Belle's descendant, and that George is the sibling of Ella and Anna...

They are almost as good as them and Potterheads, if not on the same level. Heck, these fans might also be ARMY?

I'm going back to study. Good morning. I can't think any more.

Sincerely,
Me.
